This couch is my debut into seating design. While designing this couch I spent a lot of time looking into Meso-American temples and structures, Frank Lloyd Wright’s California Homes, and other simpler ancient structures. A lot of these structure’s aesthetic value is found in the visually appearance of their construction. Its all right there for us to see, we see the different pieces and we know exactly how they go together and how it works structurally (like seeming the joinery in a Japanese Temple, or the stepped nature of a pyramid). In this, I believe there is a universal formal language we all understand and appreciate. It is approachable and easily digested. With an precise attention to proportion and the placement of different components, this piece feels simple, robust, sophisticated and timeless. Made from solid sapele and upholstered in leather this couch is an nice as they come.
