Shelving can be pretty straight forward and bland as many furniture pieces are. They are there to display and service a function. However, those basic necessities can give way to more innovative designs that expand upon how we think about display in our homes and display in a greater universal sense.
This is one shelf made in a larger series that explores shelving as a small shrine in order to show case the objects that decorate our home and give meaning to a space. The shelf is a floating shelf composed of more floating platforms with very thin edges. They stack on top of each other and have the feeling of levity, displaying the objects in a way that put them on different planes creating a feeling of order of importance and scaredness.
For reference I looked at Japanese temple roofs, the temple of Teotihuacan in Mexico, and of course the work of Ettore Sottsass, trying to distill how architecture and form gives the feeling of sacredness in display.
